Here are some maintenance notes regarding UV systems:
Ultraviolet systems are rated based on the dosage level of UV-C radiation delivered into the water (measured in mJ/cm²). The standard level of disinfection is typically 30mJ/cm², and to comply with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, a minimum dose of 40mJ/cm² is required. It's important to note that our lamps have a rated lifespan of 9000 hours (approximately 1 year), after which the lamp naturally degrades and the radiation level it produces cannot be guaranteed.
To safeguard the electrical components of the lamp from direct contact with water, the UV lamp is housed within a quartz thimble. We specifically use quartz (fused silica) for this purpose due to its strength, thermal resistance, and excellent UV transmission properties.
However, over time, metal ions embedded within the quartz thimble's silica structure can interfere with the UV-C radiation, reducing the UV transparency of the glass and making it more fragile. This phenomenon is known as solarization.
Additionally, the exterior of the quartz thimble can accumulate tannin, bio-film, algae, and scale, hindering the penetration of the lamp's ultraviolet light and impairing the system's ability to effectively sanitise the water passing through.
Considering these factors, we recommend replacing the lamp every 12 months and the thimble every 1-2 years to ensure optimal performance and maintain the system's effectiveness in water sanitization.
